Window Cleaning in Seattle: Tips
How Often Should You Clean Your Windows?
In general, most people have their windows cleaned twice a year. Once in the spring, and once in the fall. Some get them cleaned every three to four months, others one or more times per month (usually folks with home-based businesses). It’s not good to let more than a year go by between cleanings; the elements are harsh, sediment will build up and the sun will bake it on, causing pitting and hard water deposits among other problems.
If you’re planning on cleaning your own windows, here’s a few tips…
Green Scrubbies - Never use a green sink scrubbie to remove tough spots, they scratch most types of glass. Instead, use…
White Scrubbies - These are available at janitorial supply houses and some hardware stores. White scrubbies are scratch-free on most types of glass, but always test a small area first.
“0000″ Steel wool – The secret weapon of the pros. This is a very effective spot remover for bug and bird droppings, hard water spots and paint (if you can’t scrape-see Tempered Glass). It’s scratch-free on most types of glass, but again, you should always test a small out-of-sight area first.
Tempered Glass - Most entryway windows, skylights, and windows within 16″ of the floor will be tempered. You can look in the corners of the glass for the “tempered” logo if you’re unsure. The main problem with tempered glass is that it often scratches due to microscopic imperfections (from dust, etc.) that occur during production. If you try to scrape tempered glass, these particles will break off and be dragged along by the scraper, scratching your window. MAKE SURE PAINTERS AND HANDYPEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THIS! Best to preserve your glass by taking the long slow route with #0000 steel wool (again, always test a small area first.)
